“I found these cubensis mushrooms while traveling in Costa Rica in late spring 2016, and what an incredible trip it was. Costa Rica is a beautiful country with so much beauty and great eco-tourism, with plenty of mushrooms to forage. I must admit it’s my 2nd favorite country behind the US.
I was there at the end of the three-month dry season, and the rainy season was right around the corner – only light rain each day. My wife and I searched several cow fields for Psilocybe mushrooms, and the ranchers kept telling us we were two or three weeks too early. I refused to give up. I took to prayer while basking in the volcanic mineral-filled hot springs.
Following prayer, my Father sent me on a journey where I found the first cubensis of the season next to the resort property we were at. The first (or last) mushrooms often end up being aggressive strains that thrive to survive. I collected spores and ate the stems for a great night in the hot springs while watching monkeys cruise the trees like ballerinas, seeing toucans flaunting their beauty with elegant colors and attractive greetings, green fireflies dancing in the night, psychedelic frogs greeting the jungle, and sounds of the forest that tickled my senses. It was a real blessing and reminder of why I do what I do (chasing mushrooms worldwide). Since the Creator sent me to find these immediately after prayer, His divine hand and blessing are on this strain. He wants others to embrace this sacred gift!”
Mushroom specifications
Costa Rica caps reach between 20-70mm wide, and are golden brown when young, changing to light brown when mature. Height reaches an average of 150-200mm, and stems are usually symmetrical (sometimes enlarged near the base). It’s believed that this strain enjoys extremely high humidity at a stable 99% (this can be difficult to achieve, especially if residing in a dry climate).

Costa Rica, Mushrooms, and Psychedelics
Many believe (due to widespread myth) that CR has super-lax drug laws – but this is unfortunately not the case. Costa Rica only legalized medical marijuana this year, but trafficking, selling, or growing it still comes with a potential 8-15 years in prison. Psychedelic mushrooms are also banned in CR, as they are specifically named in the latest version of Costa Rica’s List of Controlled Substances.
Just as with American laws, CR’s legislation implies that psilocybin mushrooms have a high potential for addiction with no recognized medical value – a notion that has been disproven thanks to progressive research by respected institutions such as John Hopkins Medicine. There is no explicit mention of mushroom spores or syringes in Costa Rican law, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are legal.
All this being said, enforcement of said laws is an entirely different matter. Use of magic mushrooms in CR is widespread (there are even resorts where people go to do just that) and people are not usually arrested for possession of these psychoactive fungi.
